Do you charge for quotes?
No. Quotes are free for domestic, commercial and industrial work.
How soon can you come?
Within two or three days depending on urgency. Urgent jobs can usually be done the same day.
Are you available for emergencies after hours?
Yes. John takes emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The emergency call-out fee is $242 including GST.
How do I stop my safety switch from tripping?
Call John on 0412 375 251. He will help you narrow down the fault over the phone, then come out to fix it if needed.
Can you do a job other electricians haven't been able to complete?
John will come and have a look, and he is sure he will be able to help. With 49 years in the trade there are very few surprises.
Do you work on old houses?
Yes. Older and trickier homes are John's specialty.
Can you do garden lighting?
Yes.
Do you do rental electrical safety checks?
Yes. Victorian rental properties need one every 2 years, and John does them for landlords and property managers.
Do you install EV chargers and smoke alarms?
Yes, both.
Do you do new builds?
No. John does not take on new-build houses. All other work is welcome.
Which areas do you cover?
John is based in Glen Iris and works anywhere in Melbourne, most often in the inner and eastern suburbs.
Will I deal with John himself?
Yes. John works for himself, so you deal with him directly. On bigger jobs he can bring on other electricians to get it done on time.
Are you licensed?
Yes. John is a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC 28538) and has been a licensed electrician for 49 years.
Can you give me advice on rewiring over the phone?
John will generally ask to come out in person to check the switchboard and the general condition of the wiring. That way his advice and quote are based on what is actually in the house.
Do I need to rewire the whole house?
Not always. Sometimes only part of the house or the switchboard needs work. John will look at what is there and tell you what is needed and what is not.
Can you upgrade the switchboard without rewiring the house?
Often, yes. John checks the wiring first and will tell you honestly whether the existing wiring is fine to keep.
Can you add power points to an old house?
Yes. John checks that the existing wiring and switchboard can safely handle extra load first.
Can my older house have an EV charger?
Usually yes, but older switchboards often need an upgrade first. John will check and tell you what is needed.
Do you install hard-wired smoke alarms?
Yes. John installs hard-wired and interconnected smoke alarms and replaces old ones.
How often does a rental property need an electrical safety check in Victoria?
Every 2 years, carried out by a licensed or registered electrician.
